Four smugglers were killed by Jordanian border guards at dawn as they attempted to cross the country's northern border in the eastern area, according to the Jordanian national news agency, Petra news.
"Four of the smugglers were killed in the clashes, while the others retreated into Syria," said the Jordanian armed forces in an official statement.
"Armed groups attempted to cross the kingdom's international borders, taking advantage of unstable weather conditions and dense fog along the eastern military zone's border front," the statement continued, noting that "the rules of engagement were strictly applied."
"Large quantities of narcotics were seized, along with an automatic Kalashnikov weapon, and all seized items have been transferred to the competent authorities," the text concluded.
Northeastern Jordan is known as a hub for drug trafficking from Syria, notably Captagon. Periods of inclement weather often benefit smugglers who take advantage of the border guards' lack of visibility to attempt to cross the border between Syria and Jordan across large desert expanses.
