Dar al-Fatwa, the highest Sunni religious authority, confirmed Friday that the month of Ramadan will begin on Saturday, March 1. The Mufti of the Republic, Sheikh Abdellatif Deriane, wished Muslims “a sacred month filled with goodness and blessings” and hoped it would bring “peace and tranquility to the Lebanese.”
The month of Ramadan corresponds to the ninth lunar month of the Hijra and commemorates the revelation of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad by the archangel Gabriel. This holy month is one of the five pillars of Islam, along with the profession of faith, prayer, almsgiving, and pilgrimage.
