The Israeli military carried out airstrikes in Hermel, in the Bekaa Valley for the second consecutive day on Thursday, killing at least two people, according to our correspondent in the region Sarah Abdallah.
After flying over the Bekaa Plain at a medium altitude, an Israeli drone fired two missiles at a pickup truck traveling on a secondary road near the Red Crescent in Hermel, followed by a third missile when people began to gather, according to our correspondent. According to the National News Agency and our correspondent, the airstrikes resulted in two deaths, while the Health Ministry reported one death and one injury. After the strikes, three drones continued to fly over the area.
On Wednesday, an Israeli drone targeted a car on the road to Hosh al-Sayyed Ali - Al-Qasr, north of Hermel. According to Avichay Adraee, the Arabic-speaking spokesperson for the Israeli military, the target of the strike was Maher Ali Nasreddine, a commander of Hezbollah’s "Unit 4400." This unit is said to be responsible for "the transfer of weapons and combat equipment from Iran, operating along the Syria-Lebanon border," and it is believed to have "constructed many smuggling routes," according to the Israeli military.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, the Lebanese Army destroyed unexploded Israeli munitions in the Mashghara Plain, in Western Bekaa. It also announced the discovery and dismantling of two Israeli espionage devices placed in southern Lebanon on Wednesday. These devices, equipped with cameras and motion sensors, were camouflaged in a tree trunk and a stone, according to images released by the army on X.
The Israeli military has conducted several airstrikes in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa in recent days, including on Sunday, during the funeral of the late Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah. Since the cease-fire came into effect on Nov. 27, 2024, 95 people have been killed in Israeli airstrikes and shootings in Lebanon, according to our tally. Eight of them have been killed since the official end of the cease-fire period on Feb. 18.
Israel maintained its presence at several "strategic" points along the border after the deadline for withdrawal from southern Lebanon under the cease-fire agreement, which Lebanon and Hezbollah condemned.
