The Mount Lebanon investigating judge Ziad Dghaidy on Wednesday sought a life sentence with hard labor for Georges Dib, a blogger known as "Dr Food," for "manufacturing, trafficking and smuggling narcotics abroad," a judicial source told L'Orient-Le Jour.
The narcotics were hidden in cake packaging and stored in a warehouse near Beirut airport, according to the same source. 820 kilos of hashish (also known as hash, compressed powered marijuana) were seized in 2024, it added. The accused allegedly had these packages manufactured in a production site in the Sharawneh neighborhood of Baalbeck, in the Bekaa.
Georges Dib was already the subject of an arrest warrant issued by Judge Dghaidy in May 2024 for the same reasons. Rumors were circulating then about Dib fleeing to Dubai, and he is reportedly still abroad, according to L'Orient-Le Jour's sources.
At the time the arrest warrant was issued, Dghaidy also issued a warrant against a Syrian national from the Sammak family for the same reasons. The magistrate also forwarded the arrest warrant to all local authorities and sent a copy to Interpol, so that the suspect could be arrested in Lebanon or abroad.
Dib has repeatedly refuted the charges against him.
