Donald Trump described Hamas' threat to postpone the next release of hostages as "terrible," vowing a real "hell" if they are not "all returned by noon on Saturday."
The U.S. president said Israel should "cancel" the cease-fire agreement with the Palestinian group if the deadline is missed. "As far as I'm concerned, if all hostages are not returned by noon on Saturday — I think that's a reasonable date — I would say: 'Cancel it and let hell break loose,'" he told reporters at the White House.
Trump also said he is considering stopping aid to Egypt and Jordan if they do not accept Palestinians from Gaza, as outlined in his plan—an option both countries firmly reject. "We have spoken to many Palestinians. They would love to leave Gaza if they could find a place to live," Trump said Monday in the Oval Office. "They have been persecuted, spat upon, treated like garbage, and they would love to leave Gaza, but until now, they had no alternative," he said.
Earlier Monday, Egypt rejected "any compromise" that would undermine the rights of Palestinians living in Gaza, according to a statement released after a meeting between the Egyptian foreign minister and his U.S. counterpart in Washington.
King Abdullah II of Jordan, who is set to meet Trump on Tuesday in Washington, last week rejected "any attempt" to take control of the Palestinian territories and relocate its inhabitants.
