‘Forcibly relocating’ Palestinians ‘serious threat’ to Middle East, says Iran

U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to take control of Gaza and “forcibly relocate” Palestinians is a “serious threat” to the security and stability of the Middle East, Iran’s foreign minister said.

On Tuesday, during a meeting in Washington with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump said, “The United States will take control of the Gaza Strip.”

The White House occupant added that residents of Gaza, in ruins after 15 months of war, could move to Jordan or Egypt, despite opposition from those countries.

“Forcibly relocating Palestinians from Gaza is part of a conspiracy aimed at destroying Palestine in a colonial manner,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said.

“This represents a serious threat to the stability and security of the region,” he added in a phone call Saturday with his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelatty.

“It is essential that Islamic countries adopt a firm and unified stance” against this project, Araghchi emphasized.

Egypt and Jordan, two key U.S. allies, rejected Trump’s proposal last week to “cleanse” Gaza.

Both countries called for the implementation of a two-state solution, Israeli and Palestinian.

On Saturday, the Iranian foreign minister also discussed Gaza with his counterparts from Tunisia and Turkey, according to his ministry.

Iran is one of the staunchest supporters of the Palestinian cause, a cornerstone of Tehran’s foreign policy since the Islamic Republic was established in 1979.

Iranian leaders consider the state of Israel illegitimate, frequently referring to it as the “Zionist regime.”

Araghchi’s discussions came the same day Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei received Hamas leaders in Tehran for the first time since a cease-fire between the Palestinian movement and Israel took effect on Jan. 19.
