The Lebanese Foreign Ministry on Friday condemned the controversial remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Gaza, which have sparked a series of outraged denunciations around the world, considering them as "a blatant violation of international law."

In a statement, the Boutros Palace expressed its "deep concern about the plans to displace the Palestinian people and attempts to forcibly uproot them from their land." It argued that Trump's statements, not mentioned in the communiqué, represent "an attempt to seize Palestinian lands and forcibly displace Palestinians, a bid to liquidate the Palestinian cause and remove the right of return for refugees, especially those in Lebanon."

According to Lebanese diplomacy, this is a "blatant violation of international law, international humanitarian law, the Charter of Human Rights, and the Lebanese Constitution," and called on the international community to work towards "the implementation of the two-state solution."

Trump said Tuesday, in the presence of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visiting Washington, that he planned "a long-term takeover" of the Gaza Strip by the United States, giving few details on how his country could evict more than two million Palestinians and control this war-torn territory. His administration, however, seemed to backtrack on this proposal on Wednesday after facing a wave of criticism from Palestinians, Arab governments, and world leaders. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Trump's proposal was not "hostile," while the White House reiterated that the president had not "committed" to the presence of American troops in Gaza.
