When asked Monday about remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump that discussions and meetings with Russia were scheduled, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that contacts were 'apparently planned' with the new U.S. administration and that Moscow had a "planning process."

He further indicated that the Russian government believed that holding elections in Ukraine was "necessary" for legitimacy reasons. Peskov added that there had not been any "serious discussions" so far about the participants in the talks aimed at ending the conflict.

"The United States wishes for Ukraine to hold elections, potentially by the end of the year, especially if Kiev can establish a truce with Russia in the coming months," the top official for President Donald Trump on Ukraine told Reuters.
