In Burj al-Barajneh, Palestinian refugees are divided 'between joy and tears'
A wave of joy swept over the largest Palestinian camp in Beirut with the announcement of an agreement, only to be marred by "celebratory gunfire" and the extent of destruction in the enclave.

In Burj al-Barajneh, in the southern suburbs of Beirut, the soundtrack to the announcement of the cease-fire between Israel and Hamas is a concert of heavy gunfire. Night is just falling on Jan. 15, 2025, as bullets streak across the dark sky, blaring above the Palestinians gathered in the shadow of the al-Furqan mosque.But the joy was too strong for anyone to be upset. Sawsan, a teacher, found a way around it. Surrounded by women and children, she started singing for the martyrs of Gaza, and soon the choir covered the noise of the shots. "This is the moment we've been waiting for for a year and a half, after genocide and so much suffering. Finally, victory!" Rana exclaimed beside her.
