BEIRUT — Yet another body was recovered on Thursday from under the rubble of buildings destroyed by Israeli bombardment before the cease-fire came into effect on Nov. 27. in the village of Khiam in Marjayoun district.
"Search and rescue teams of the General Directorate of Civil Defense, in full cooperation with the Lebanese Army, managed to retrieve the body from the Motaqal neighborhood in Khiam," the Civil Defense said in a statement. The body was transferred to the Marjayoun Governmental Hospital to complete the necessary procedures.
Rescue workers have been conducting search operations for a month now in the southern Lebanese village that was the site of intense battles between Hezbollah fighters and the Israeli army. Even with the implementation of the cease-fire, the Israeli army continued to operate there and took advantage of the truce to advance into neighborhoods that Hezbollah had prevented it from infiltrating during the war, and blowing up homes on the outskirts.
Dozens of people were reported missing during the two-month all-out war and more than 30 bodies have been pulled from the rubble since the Lebanese Army was able to enter the village.
According to L'Orient Today's correspondent in the South, it's estimated that around 100 people are still missing amid the destruction. Civil Defense announced that search and survey operations will resume on Friday morning in the same location, until all the missing persons are found.
The Israeli army continued to detonate buildings near Aita al-Shaab, in Bint Jbeil district, and in Kfar Kila, in Marjayoun district, and the explosions were heard throughout surrounding villages.
