In the first round, two-thirds of the votes, or 86 out of 128, are required for a candidate to be elected. In the second round and beyond, the required majority drops to 65 votes, or half plus one. The session was adjourned for two hours following the first round.

In previous electoral sessions, MPs opposed to the presented candidate would leave after the first round, causing the session to lose quorum. This led to more than two years of presidential vacuum in Lebanon.
