MP Neemat Frem (Kesrwan), who officially declared his candidacy for the Lebanese presidency a little less than a month ago, announced on Wednesday that he supported the election of the army's commander, Joseph Aoun, to the highest office.
"The general atmosphere" in Lebanon and among the international community "seems to be leaning towards a consensus around the name of the army commander during tomorrow's session," Frem told reporters after a meeting of opposition MPs with Hezbollah at the Kataeb party headquarters in Beirut. Given this situation, he stated he is ready to support General Aoun's candidacy. "If the necessary consensus is reached, I will be among the first" to welcome the election, affirmed the industrialist and MP. However, he emphasized that if Aoun cannot be elected, he will continue his "electoral battle."
Frem announced his candidacy for the presidency on Dec. 12, highlighting his "commitment to the application of the cease-fire agreement, the entire U.N. Resolution 1701 and other resolutions on Lebanon, in order to ensure the country's stability."
