The southern Lebanese municipality of Bani Hayyan, in Marjayoun district, "urgently called on the Lebanese government, the trusted national army, the international community, and the monitoring body of Resolution 1701 to take immediate action to halt the Israeli aggression" on the town, in a statement released on Thursday.
Since Wednesday, "the Israeli forces have been destroying homes, places of worship, and infrastructure in the village without restraint." The municipality, located about five kilometers from the border with Israel, also appealed "to the Lebanese Army, the Lebanese Red Cross, and UNIFIL to intervene urgently and save the life of an elderly, ill woman still in the village. She is facing severe physical and psychological pressure, and contact with her has been lost since Wednesday afternoon."
The cease-fire agreement, effective from Nov. 27, calls for the withdrawal the Israeli army back over the Blue Line and Hezbollah's fighters north of the Litani River over a 60-day period. To ensure security, the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) will deploy approximately 10,000 troops in the region.
A five-nation panel, led by the United States, has been established to oversee the implementation of the terms. However, there have been reports of violations from both sides, especially from Israel, which continues to detonate and bulldoze homes as well as bomb, shell and shoot at southern Lebanese villages, raising concerns about the longevity of the cease-fire.
