Mohamed al-Bashir has been appointed caretaker prime minister of the transitional Syrian government until March 1, 2025, he said in a televised statement on Tuesday.
Bashir ran the rebel-led Salvation Government before the 12-day lightning offensive swept into Damascus.
"The general command has entrusted us with the task of leading the transitional government until March 1," Bashir said in a statement that was reported by television, presenting him as "the new prime minister."
A source in Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) told AFP that he will lead "a government tasked with handling current affairs."
This government will assume its role "until the start of the launch of the constitutional process," and "a new government will then be formed."
HTS took power on Sunday after President Bashar al-Assad fled the country following 13 years of war.
The day after entering Damascus, HTS leader Abu Mohammad al-Jolani held talks on Monday with then-Prime Minister Mohammed al-Jalali to "coordinate the transition of power," after parliament and the ruling Baath party gave their support to the transition.
