BEIRUT — Hezbollah MP Hassan Fadlallah described the “developments in Syria as a significant and dangerous turning point,” on Monday.

He stressed the “need for careful evaluation away from public platforms, noting that despite the severity of the events, Hezbollah and its resistance remain steadfast, drawing strength from their faith, people and resilience.”

On Sunday Syrian rebels announced on Syrian state television the fall of President Bashar al-Assad and the "liberation" of the capital Damascus after a swift offensive that ended over five decades of Assad family rule.

Fadlallah made these remarks during two ceremonies organized by Hezbollah, in the southern Lebanese towns of Tebnine and Hariss (Bint Jbeil,) honoring Hezbollah members killed during the latest war with Israel.

The events were attended by clerics, local officials, families of the killed, and residents from nearby areas.

Addressing concerns about the potential impact of developments in Syria on Lebanon and Hezbollah, Fadlallah stated, “No matter how critical the situation in Syria becomes, it cannot weaken us. Our strength comes from our faith, our people and our steadfastness.” He pointed to the example of “residents returning to their villages despite threats, similar to their resilience in 2006.”

Commenting on Israel’s violations of the cease-fire, Fadlallah emphasized that the resistance had prevented Israel from achieving its objectives, including eliminating Hezbollah and occupying southern Lebanon up to the Litani River.

He criticized the government and the international community for relying on international resolutions, questioning their ability to protect Lebanon from Israeli aggression.

Fadlallah concluded that “Hezbollah would continue to fulfill its responsibilities, rebuild what was destroyed, and learn from recent experiences to enhance its capabilities.”
