The Syrian army confirmed on Saturday that anti-regime fighters had entered "large parts" of Aleppo in the north of the country, reporting dozens of soldiers killed in intense clashes.

"Armed terrorist organizations launched a wide-scale attack from multiple fronts on the Aleppo and Idlib [northwest] battlefronts," said a statement from the army, citing intense fighting across "more than 100 kilometers."

"Dozens of our armed forces were killed, and others were injured," the statement added, noting that anti-regime fighters had managed to "penetrate large parts of Aleppo’s neighborhoods."
