The Lebanese Army announced on Thursday that several of its units were beginning to carry out various missions in parallel with the increased deployment of troops in the southern Litani sector, as provided for in the cease-fire agreement.

“In parallel with the reinforcement of the army's deployment in the southern Litani sector, units have begun to carry out their missions in the South, the Bekaa and Beirut's southern suburbs.” These missions include “setting up temporary checkpoints, opening roads and detonating unexploded ordnance,” reads a statement from Army Command.

In accordance with the agreement which came into force at 4 a.m. on Wednesday, the Lebanese Army was on the front foot at dawn to begin its mission of maintaining the truce in southern Lebanon. As part of the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1701, the military is tasked with taking the place of Hezbollah fighters and overseeing the withdrawal of the Shiite movement's weapons south of the Litani River. Dozens of armored vehicles and personnel carriers were seen on the country's roads heading south on Wednesday.
