BEIRUT — United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert begins a visit to Israel Sunday, where she is set to meet with senior Israeli officials, the U.N. said in a brief statement on their Telegram channel.

"Discussions are expected to centre on the current crisis and on the urgency of a cease-fire and the comprehensive implementation of Security Council resolution 1701," the statement said.

U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701, adopted in 2006, aimed to end hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel after the July war. It called for a cease-fire, the withdrawal of Hezbollah from southern Lebanon, and the deployment of the Lebanese Army and UNIFIL to maintain peace in the area.

The resolution also emphasized respecting Lebanon's sovereignty, including halting Israeli violations. However, implementation has been partial, with Hezbollah maintaining military presence and continued Israeli actions in southern Lebanon.
