BEIRUT — Caretaker Minister of Education Abbas Halabi called on all schools, including public and private universities, in the districts of Beirut, Chouf, northern Metn, Baabda and Aley on Sunday evening to suspend in-person classes and conduct them online instead, on Monday, Nov. 18, and Tuesday, Nov. 19, according to an official statement.
The announcement follows two Israeli airstrikes against Beirut earlier in the day, the first on the Syria Baath Party offices in Ras al-Nabaa and the second on an electronics store and the car outside of it in Mar Elias, both of which targeted Hezbollah officials.
The minister urged the heads of the schools, colleges, vocational training establishments and universities affected by the closure to exercise caution, ensure safety and follow the statements issued by the ministry.
Following Halabi's statement, Lebanese University President Bassam Badrane announced in his own press release that courses will be delivered online throughout next week, starting on Monday.
A "limited" administrative presence will be maintained on Monday and Tuesday at LU centers, branches and institutes located in Beirut's administrative zone, in order to process urgent transactions while respecting security conditions, Badrane said.
