Some schools reopened Sunday in northern Israel, which has been under near-daily attacks by Hezbollah, following a relaxation of civil defense restrictions, an Education Ministry spokeswoman said. Schools were allowed to resume in certain areas, including the Haifa Bay and Galilee regions, according to new civil defense guidelines published on Saturday.
The Education Ministry does not yet have figures on how many schools have reopened, and these numbers will only be available later in the day, the spokeswoman added. Schools closest to the Lebanese border, however, remain closed.
Tens of thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes since Oct. 8, 2023, when the Lebanese Islamist movement began launching projectiles, mainly rockets, into northern Israel, claiming to act in solidarity with its ally Hamas in Gaza. More than a year later, 60,000 remain displaced. Shelling of the border area has intensified since the start of the Israeli ground offensive in southern Lebanon on Sept. 30.
The Israeli army reported on Sunday that “around ten projectiles were detected crossing into Israeli territory from Lebanon” in northern and western Galilee.
