Sacking Gallant: The latest victory for Israel’s far-right
The former Israeli defense minister, one of the Biden administration’s favored interlocutors, was perceived as the last impediment for a prime minister with autocratic tendencies.

On the evening of Nov. 5, while the country is embroiled in wars in Gaza and Lebanon, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired Defense Minister Yoav Gallant — whose position has always been threatened. Netanyahu cited a breakdown in trust in recent months, and differences in positions. The decision is effective as of Friday when Israel Katz will leave the Foreign Ministry to succeed him. Although rumors had been circulating for months, the sacking’s announcement pushed thousands of demonstrators to take to the streets of Jerusalem, most notably in front of Netanyahu’s residence, and Tel Aviv, where the masses paralyzed a major highway.
