The winner of the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize, Iranian activist Narjes Mohammadi, was hospitalized on Monday, after nine weeks of recurring health problems, the activist's official page on X announced.
“After nearly nine weeks” during which all care was denied, Narjes Mohammadi "has finally been hospitalized," a series of publications read. This was made possible thanks to “the support of activists, the Free Narjes coalition and pressure exerted by the international community and the media.”
The 52-year-old activist is suffering from “serious health problems” as a result of her incarceration and solitary confinement, and several months of “neglect and deprivation.” In these circumstances, “simple hospitalization” is not going to help her and she requires “full access to medical care, as part of an unconditional release,” added the message on X.
Mohammadi has been held since November 2021 in Iran's Evin prison, which houses political prisoners and people with ties to the West. She has spent much of the last decade in prison. In 2023, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, notably for her fight against the death penalty.
According to the Associated Press, the activist suffers from heart problems and, according to a medical report published in September, a serious complication has developed in the main artery of his heart.
