U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Tuesday urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to "capitalize" on the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar to achieve a cease-fire agreement in Gaza, according to the State Department.
During their meeting in Jerusalem, Blinken emphasized the importance of leveraging Sinwar's death [killed by Israeli forces on Oct. 16 in southern Gaza] to secure the release of all hostages and end the conflict in a manner that ensures long-term security for both Israelis and Palestinians, said State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller.
Blinken also called on Netanyahu to take "additional steps" to facilitate humanitarian aid to civilians in war-torn Gaza. He underscored the need for Israel to "increase and sustain" the flow of humanitarian assistance across the Gaza Strip to ensure that aid reaches civilians throughout the territory, Miller told reporters.
