Hezbollah announces it's moving into a 'new phase of escalation' in its war with Israel: Day 377 of the Gaza and Lebanon wars

What you need to know

The Israeli army accidentally killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar during an exchange of fire in Rafah.

Netanyahu says that despite Sinwar's death, the war "is not over yet," while the U.S. and France call for his killing to be used as an "opportunity" to bring an end to fighting.

White phosphorus shelling is suspected, particularly in areas where the Israeli army is trying to advance in southern Lebanon.

The U.S. military has struck Houthi positions in Yemen.

That concludes our live coverage of the wars in Gaza and Lebanon for today. We'll be back tomorrow morning. Thanks for joining us.

Houssam Zaki, Deputy Secretary-General of the Arab League, says that U.N. Resolution 1701 "contains numerous provisions which must be implemented in full."

Giving a statement following the death of Sinwar, Zaki offered his condolences to the Palestinian people and proposed that if resolution 1701 is implimented, " it will be the real entry point to end the war in Lebanon."

"The priorities are to stop the war as quickly as possible, to allow aid to flow to the Palestinian people, to stop the unjust violence against Palestinians in northern Gaza and to stop the war in Lebanon," Zaki said, adding that "international contacts with the Israelis have all failed, as they continue to repress the Palestinian people."

02:25 Beirut Time

Eight days ago, the White Houses' Brett McGurk said the U.S. believed Sinwar to be in a tunnel somewhere underneath Gaza, "with hostages in his vicinity," echoing similar statements from Israeli officials that Sinwar was in hiding, fearing assassination and using captives as a shield.

On Wednesday, Sinwar, armed and wearing a bullet-proof vest, t-shirt, and his head wrapped in a keffiyeh, was with two other Palestinian fighters whose identities remain unknown when they encountered what the New York Times described as a unit of trainee squad commanders in the besieged Strip's southernmost city.

Here's what we know about what happened on Wednesday, in the operation in which the Israeli army accidentally killed its most wanted man.

02:05 Beirut Time

For the second time, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for an attack on Israeli soldiers deployed near Aita al-Shaab, in the Bint Jbeil district, by launching "a large salvo of missiles." This strike, according to the party, took place as Israeli soldiers tried to evacuate troops that had been wounded or killed.

In another statement, Hezbollah announced that its fighters, "after monitoring the movements of Israeli enemy soldiers on the outskirts of Kfar Kila," targeted the troops with artillery shells at 1:05 a.m.

02:00 Beirut Time

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar marked "the beginning of the end" of the war.

"Yahya Sinwar is dead. He was killed in Rafah" by the Israeli army, Netanyahu said in a video message in which he spoke in English, adding: "this does not mean the end of the war in Gaza, but the beginning of the end."

01:52 Beirut Time

Hezbollah claimed responsibility for an attack carried out by its fighters against Israeli soldiers deployed on the outskirts of Aita al-Shaab, in the Bint Jbeil district, using "a large salvo of missiles." Israeli Channel 12 news had broadcast images showing, it said, the Israeli flag raised atop a tower in this village, surrounded by rubble.

Hezbollah announces in a statement that it is moving into a "new phase of escalation in the confrontation with the Israeli enemy."

"Based on the directives of the Resistance command, the operations room of the Islamic Resistance announces the passage to a new phase of escalation in the confrontation with the Israeli enemy, the developments and events of which will be announced in the coming days," the statement, released on the party's "War Media" Telegram channel, reads.

The party claims to be inflicting "enormous losses on the Israeli army in terms of equipment and personnel, on the lines of confrontation from the southern front in Lebanon to the areas where it is present deep in occupied Palestine."

"Since the start of the ground operations, the Israeli army has mobilized five military brigades with more than 70,000 officers and soldiers, as well as hundreds of tanks and military vehicles," the statement says. "In response, hundreds of Islamic Resistance fighters were fully prepared and ready to face any Israeli ground incursion into the villages of southern Lebanon."

00:33 Beirut Time

Hezbollah claimed that its fighters targeted two Israeli Merkava tanks at 10:50 p.m. in Jal al-Deir, near Avivim in northern Israel, opposite the Lebanese village of Maroun al-Ras. According to Hezbollah, its fighters used "guided missiles," which caused the tanks to catch fire, killing and injuring the crew.

23:54 Beirut Time

Several politicians are referring to Sinwar's death as an "opportunity" in what appears to be a concerted effort by key players in the international community to renew negotiations for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas, and by extension, Hezbollah.

Macron, Harris, and now U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin have all called for Sinwar's death to be used as a turning point toward ending the war. "Sinwar's death represents a unique opportunity to achieve a lasting cease-fire, end this terrible war, allow Israelis to return safely to their homes, dramatically accelerate humanitarian aid to alleviate suffering in Gaza, and bring relief and hope to Palestinians who have endured so much under the oppressive Hamas regime," Austin said.

23:42 Beirut Time

Axios has reported that U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken plans to visit the Middle East in the coming days to discuss ways of promoting a cease-fire and a Gaza hostage agreement. As of Oct. 7, 2024, a total of 97 hostages taken captive during Hamas' al-Aqsa Flood operation a year earlier remain unaccounted for.

23:38 Beirut Time

Echoing earlier comments from U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, French President Emmanuel Macron has called the death of Sinwar an "opportunity" that must be seized to bring military operations to an end.

"This opportunity must be seized so that all the hostages can be freed and the war can finally be brought to an end," Macron said a press conference following the first summit between the European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council in Brussels today. He pledged to work "with Israeli, Arab and American partners" for a "cease-fire in Gaza" and "to finally open up a credible political perspective for Israelis and Palestinians alike."

Macron also called on Israel to end its military operations in Lebanon, "not to extend its ground action there" and to "respect the sovereignty" of the country. "For France, Lebanon's sovereignty is an essential cause that it will always defend," he said, adding that he believes Iran and Hezbollah carry a "heavy responsibility" for triggering Israel's operations.

22:57 Beirut Time

In an interview with Le Figaro in Geneva, the President of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Ghalibaf, hinted that Teheran would be willing to negotiate with Paris to implement U.N. Resolution 1701, which stipulates that only the Lebanese Army can be deployed in southern Lebanon.

Ghalibaf told the French daily that he would like to see a cease-fire in southern Lebanon as soon as possible and that his country would be ready to negotiate concrete measures to implement 1701 with France, which would act as a mediator between Hezbollah and Israel.

The Iranian politician, also a former military officer, defended the Iranian ballistic missile strikes on Israel on Oct. 1, saying, "History has taught us that the Zionist regime only understands the language of force. It attacked our diplomatic representation in Syria, martyring several high-ranking Iranian officials. Despite our response on April 13, 2024, it did it again, assassinating Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in the middle of Teheran, while he was our guest for an official ceremony. If we didn't retaliate, this Zionist regime would continue to attack us."

22:50 Beirut Time

Israeli media has released a photo reportedly showing Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar the moment before a drone strike killed him. According to Times of Israel, the Israeli army had struck the building where Sinwar and two other fighters had taken cover. The army sent a surveillance drone inside the semi-demolished building to confirm whether the three fighters, anonymous to them at the time, had been killed. The report says that Sinwar then hurled a wooden stick at the drone in an attempt to bring it down. The army fired again, with the strike that ultimately killed him.

22:26 Beirut Time

U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller says Washington hopes that "whoever the next leader of Hamas is," they will "pursue a different path forward," Israeli media reports.

“What we would hope, is that whoever the next leader of Hamas is, he will look at what has happened over the past year and look at the suffering that Hamas’s actions have brought upon the Palestinian people who they aim to represent, whose cause they aim to advance, and decide that they ought to pursue a different path forward,” Miller says during a press briefing.

Israel has long listed among its top military objectives in its war on Gaza the goal of dismantling Hamas. Numerous times in the last year, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated the war will not end until Hamas is "destroyed."

"And it must end such that Israel is secure; the hostages are released; the suffering in Gaza ends; and the Palestinian people can realize their right to dignity, security, freedom and self-determination.”

The Arabic-language spokesperson for the Israeli army, Avichay Adraee, called on residents of a building in Tamnin, in the Bekaa, to evacuate at least 500 meters away. This building is "close to Hezbollah installations," according to him. According to the published map, it is next to the "Yassine pharmacy," on the main road of the village.

These evacuation orders are regularly issued by the spokesperson. They usually concern buildings in the southern suburbs of Beirut or entire villages in south Lebanon. This is the first time that a specific building in the Bekaa has been called for evacuation since the start of the Israeli army's expanded offensive on Sept. 23. Tamnin has, however, been hit several times.
