Israeli military strikes have killed at least 40 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, as Israeli forces tightened their grip on Jabalia in the enclave's north on Tuesday, the scene of fierce battles with Hamas-led fighters, Reuters reports.
Palestinian health authorities said at least 11 people had been killed by Israeli fire near Falouja in Jabalia, the largest of Gaza's eight historic refugee camps, while another 10 were killed in Bani Souhaila in eastern Khan Younis, in the south, when an Israeli missile hit a house.
Earlier on Tuesday, an Israeli air strike destroyed three homes in the Gaza City suburb of Sabra, and the local civil emergency service said it had recovered two bodies from the site, while the search continued for 12 more people believed to have been in the homes at the time of the attack.
A further five people were killed when a house was bombed in the Nusseirat camp in central Gaza.
Jabalia has been the target of an Israeli offensive for over 10 days. Troops have returned to areas in the north that were heavily bombed in the first months of the year-long war.
