BEIRUT — Lebanon's Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri reaffirmed Lebanon's official stance, supported by the Lebanese government, "calling for an immediate cease-fire and the deployment of the Lebanese army to the international borders in accordance with U.N. Resolution 1701," in a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron Saturday, the state-run National News Agency reported.

Macron and Berri discussed Lebanon's "current situation and political efforts to halt Israeli aggression."

"They also discussed France's efforts, including hosting an international conference to support Lebanon in overcoming the humanitarian crisis resulting from the displacement of over 1.2 million Lebanese," NNA concluded.

Macron had announced that he will host an international conference on Lebanon on Oct. 24, just before the closing of the 19th Francophonie summit on Saturday evening in Paris.

Macron, on Friday, had emphasized that ''halting the export of weapons'' used in Gaza and Lebanon was the "only leverage" to end the conflicts while assuring that it was not about "disarming" Israel. "This is by no means a call to disarm Israel against the threats facing this country and its people, who are friends," he added.

Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah, required Hezbollah’s militia to withdraw behind the Litani River in exchange for Israel halting violations of Lebanese sovereignty. The resolution also mandated a significant deployment of the Lebanese army and the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in the border region. In the past two days, five peacekeepers have been injured by Israeli strikes while the UNIFIL states it refuses to abandon its post in southern Lebanon.

Around 1.5 million people have been displaced in Lebanon since fighting broke out between Hezbollah and Israel and further escalated on Sept.23. Over the past year, at least 2,141 people have been killed in Lebanon, with nearly 10,099 others injured, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry.
