The death toll from Tuesday's attack at a tram station in Tel Aviv rose to seven overnight with the announcement of the death of one of the people injured by the two assailants, Palestinians from the West Bank, one of whom was shot dead and the other wounded, according to Israeli police.

"The injured person arrived (at the emergency room) in critical condition (...) and after fighting to save them, the doctors had to pronounce them dead," said Tel Aviv's Ichilov Hospital.

Before that, police had announced that six people were killed and nine others injured to varying degrees in an attack involving automatic weapons and knives carried out by "two terrorists," who were eventually "neutralized" by passersby who used their personal firearms.

The identities of those killed have not been officially released. Only two of them were identified on Wednesday morning by Israeli media: Shahar Goldman, aged 30, and Inbar Segev, 33, both Israelis.

The attack occurred at the Sderot Yerushalayim tram stop, in the Jaffa neighborhood.

The two gunmen opened fire inside the tram car before getting off and continuing to shoot along Yerushalayim Avenue, according to police.

One of the assailants was shot dead in the street, while the other was injured and taken to a hospital in serious condition.

According to preliminary findings, the two men were Palestinians from the West Bank, a territory occupied by Israel since 1967.

The attack, which had not been claimed by Wednesday morning, took place early in the evening, around 7 p.m. (4 p.m. GMT), shortly before Iran launched an attack on Israel by firing about 200 missiles at the Tel Aviv area.
