The commander of the Lebanese army, General Joseph Aoun, met on Friday with a delegation of retired military personnel, while the latter have increased their protests in the streets to demand a readjustment of their pensions in a Lebanon in full crisis.
The meeting focused on "the situation of retired military personnel and coordination with the government to find appropriate solutions to their demands."
On Tuesday, the government was unable to meet due to a lack of quorum, as access to the Grand Serail in Beirut was blocked by angry protesters, including army veterans. The cabinet nevertheless met in secret the following day. The retirees are demanding an improvement in their retirement benefits and a salary increase for the entire public sector.
