Why Sunni militias are reawakening in southern Lebanon
The attacks against Israeli sites by various factions outside of Hezbollah are characterized as arising from an “opportunity” on the ground. Some observers, however, view these actions as strategic political maneuvers.

Militias other than Hezbollah have kept a low profile along Lebanon’s southern border in recent months. However, since Saturday, the al-Qassam Brigades (the armed wing of Hamas), the Resistance Brigades (closely aligned with Hezbollah) and the Jamaa al-Islamiya (Islamic Group; a Sunni group), have all announced strikes against Israeli positions.On Wednesday, the al-Qassam Brigades announced that they “fired a salvo of 30 rockets from southern Lebanon at the headquarters of the 300 West Brigade in Khirbet Maar,” located in northern Israel.Since January, Hamas has launched six attacks from Lebanese territory.
