A member of the Lebanese Internal Security Forces (ISF) was killed in a shooting that occurred after a raid in Beirut's southern suburbs, targeting a suspected gang involved in stealing electric cables, police announced on Friday.
In a statement, the ISF reported the death of 35-year-old Adjutant Nicolas Mohammad Mokdad, originally from Bourj el-Barajneh, also located in the southern suburbs. He was in Bir Hassan on Wednesday after a raid against "members of a cable theft gang," during which several suspects were arrested. After the operation, several officers remained at the scene when an individual "unrelated to the gang" opened fire, wounding Mokdad. The officer succumbed to his injuries the following day.
The shooting suspect, a 38-year-old Lebanese man wanted by authorities for "shooting, making threats, and resisting police orders," was arrested.
In its statement, the police noted that Nicolas Mokdad was married and the father of two children.
