BEIRUT — Caretaker Health Minister Firass Abiad launched the "Reaya" program on Tuesday, a World Bank-funded initiative designed to advance universal health coverage. The announcement was made during a press conference at the Ministry of Public Health.

The program's first phase, which will last one year, aims to provide nearly free health services to 210,000 beneficiaries from the Ministry of Social Affairs' Emergency Social Safety Net program (known as "Aman"). These beneficiaries were selected based on their level of need.

The "Reaya" program covers essential health services, including early detection tests, vaccinations, and mental health support. The initial funding for this phase is approximately $31.7 million.

Services will be available at 67 primary health care centers across 19 districts in eight governorates, ensuring accessibility for beneficiaries. The program offers packages that include wellness, maternal and reproductive health, and both acute and chronic disease management. These packages encompass specialized consultations, diagnostic tests, maternal care, essential medicines, vaccines, dental health, community health services, and some mental health support.

Since implementation began on Sept. 5, more than 25,000 individuals have registered, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 126,000. Registration involves receiving a text message with a link to connect with the ministry, followed by an appointment at a designated health center using a provided code.

Looking ahead, Abiad expressed hopes to expand the program to reach a broader segment of Lebanese society. To support this, about $18 million has been included in the Ministry of Public Health's budget proposal to the Cabinet for future continuity and expansion.

Given Lebanon's economic crisis and the significant number of people living below the poverty line, the program aims to provide crucial social assistance to the country's most vulnerable families.
