BEIRUT — The process of unloading gas oil into the storage tanks of the Deir Ammar thermal plant began Monday morning, according to L'Orient Today's correspondent in the north.
The plant will start operating and be connected to the public grid once the unloading process is completed.
The Deir Ammar plant had been out of service and disconnected from the public grid since Aug.7.
The fuel is part of 30,000 tons of Egyptian diesel purchased on the spot market by the Lebanese government which will be distributed between the Zahrani power plan in southern Lebanon and Deir Ammar in the north.
Since mid-August, the Lebanese have had less than an hour of electricity per day on average, relying heavily on private generators. Even with full capacity and sufficient fuel, EDL cannot provide continuous power nationwide.
