A Lebanese man identified as A.Z. was arrested Sunday in Chiyah, a southern suburb of Beirut, for appearing in a social media video where he directed insults and provocations at the Lebanese Army, fired shots, and caused disturbances in South Lebanon, according to a statement by the Directorate of Military Intelligence.
The statement added that the man is accused of "provoking incidents in the South," with some social media users indicating the video was filmed in the Nabatieh region.
The video, which has circulated widely on social media, shows two men in a car driving past an army checkpoint to the sound of festive music. One of the men, armed, hurls a homophobic insult and accuses a soldier of being an "Israeli agent."
In another clip, one of the men brandishes his weapon and points it at the windshield. A masked man then pulls out an automatic weapon and fires it wildly as the car continues to move. Another sequence shows automatic weapons lying on a table.
The army statement noted that "weapons of war" were seized from the suspect's possession and handed over to the relevant authorities. The statement did not clarify whether the car's second passenger had been arrested. An investigation is currently underway.
