Environmental activists in Akkar, northern Lebanon, have reported a massive large-scale cutting of century-old trees in the Qamouaa region, a vital plateau known as Lebanon’s largest forested area and water reservoir. The area is home to forests of Cilician firs, cedars, junipers, oaks, and other species.

According to the activists, who requested anonymity, unknown individuals cut down cedars, Cilician firs, and junipers on Thursday, Aug. 29, in the Maqal al-Touffaha area of Fneidek village.

Witnesses also reported that trucks loaded with juniper logs were seen passing through the area without any interference. They believe the tree felling is not the work of locals preparing for the winter cold — many of whom have struggled to heat their homes since Lebanon's socio-economic crisis began in 2019 — but rather the actions of organized and armed gangs cutting down these trees for commercial gain.

The activists shared photos and information with a source at the Agriculture Ministry, which promised to launch an investigation.

Illegal tree felling intensifies each year as winter approaches. Trees like cedars, junipers, and Cilician firs, especially those that are centuries old, are legally protected. However, their regeneration has become increasingly difficult due to changing climatic and ecological conditions, such as the disappearance of bird species that play a crucial role in seed dispersal.
