Three individuals of Syrian nationality were arrested by the Aley Brigade as part of an investigation into an attempted extortion, reported the Internal Security Forces (ISF) press office on Thursday.
The three men are suspected of attempting to extort $10,000 from a Syrian woman by threatening to kidnap her minor son, the statement said.
According to the ISF, B.A., born in 1979, who is believed to be the main instigator, and M.S., born in 2004, were arrested on July 2, 2024, in Aley, in the mountains east of Beirut. They were apprehended by a patrol that “stopped the first individual riding a moped and the second in a Toyota car.” During the interrogation, “the first admitted to threatening the victim and extorting money from her.” He also confessed to “planning to kidnap the child if his demands were not met, in collaboration with an accomplice, M.J., born in 1983, also Syrian.” The latter was arrested and “admitted to the charges against him” during interrogation, and “acknowledged being aware of B.A.'s actions.”
The three men have been referred to the judiciary, and their vehicles have been seized.
