BEIRUT — Lebanon's highest Sunni authority Dar al-Fatwa announced on Monday that Wednesday will be the first day of Eid al-Fitr, the holiday which marks the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan.
In a statement, Grand Mufti Abdelatif Deriane said that he hopes this Eid will "bring peace, peace, and relief for all the Lebanese."
Cleric Mohamad Hussein Fadlallah's institution, which bases its calculations on the cycles of the moon in order to determine the arrival of Eid, also declared Wednesday as the start of the holiday. Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini, too, announced Wednesday as the beginning of Eid.
Unlike the standard months, months in Islam are marked by the return of the moon in the sky after the new moon.
