BEIRUT — During a meeting in Amman on Sunday with Lebanon's caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, King Abdullah II of Jordan expressed his support for Lebanon's efforts to “strengthen its stability,” as tension continues in southern Lebanon amidst the Hamas-Israel war.
During the meeting, King Abdullah II affirmed that Jordan “supported the efforts of the Lebanese brothers to strengthen stability,” according to a press release from Mikati’s office.
The King stressed the need to intensify international efforts to stop the war in Gaza and prevent further escalation. The monarch also pleaded in favor of “the uninterrupted delivery of humanitarian aid” to Gaza.
Hostilities between Hezbollah and the Israeli army has resulted in casualties on both sides.
On Friday, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah warned that “all options on our front are open and examined,” threatening to “resort to them at any time.” Nasrallah said "an escalation on the [Lebanese] front depends on two things: the evolution of the situation in Gaza and the behavior of the Zionist enemy towards Lebanon."
On Saturday, Mikati met in Amman American Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who said "he was deeply concerned about the exchanges of fire along Lebanon's southern border with Israel" and stressed "the importance to ensure that the conflict between Israel and Hamas does not spread to other areas.”
