BEIRUT — Hezbollah Deputy Secretary-General Naim Qassem said Friday that "the entire axis of resistance remains vigilant" after Israeli strikes hit southern Lebanon before dawn in response to rocket fire towards Israel on Thursday.

"The senseless rants of Zionist leaders, who wave threats and intimidation, serve no purpose," Qassem wrote on Twitter on Friday.

"'The balance of deterrence is there, and the Palestinian fighters are on the ground. The entire axis of resistance remains vigilant," he continued.

"The defeats of the Israeli enemy are piling up, and victory is approaching, God willing," Qassem added.

Qassem's remarks are the first from Iran-backed Hezbollah since Friday morning's Israeli strikes.

Israel, which attributed the rocket fire to Palestinian groups in Lebanon, has said it is also investigating the possibility of Iranian involvement in the barrage. "We assume Hezbollah knew about it, and Lebanon also has some responsibility. We are also investigating whether Iran was involved," a spokesperson for the Israeli army said.

The rocket fire came a day after Israeli police violently stormed the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, Islam's third holiest site, to dislodge Palestinians praying during the holy month of Ramadan.
