BEIRUT — The Lebanese Army on Monday night arrested a man suspected of spying for Israel in the village of Dohat Aramoun, south of Beirut, according to a senior military source and a security source.

A military patrol with dogs cordoned off a street near a branch of the Resistance Brigades, an armed group affiliated with Hezbollah, the security source told L'Orient Today on condition of anonymity.

Army personnel then prevented residents from walking around in the area or filming the scene, according to the source. However, images of the operation filmed by residents were circulated on social networks.

A man named only by his initials, M. M., suspected of spying for Israel, was arrested during the Monday night operation. Personnel also seized a laptop and communication devices, the security source said.

According to the senior military source, the suspect is a Lebanese national.

Some local media outlets reported that the suspect is a high-ranking agent who planned to commit a series of assassinations in Lebanon. The security source and senior military source declined to comment on the accusation, which L'Orient Today could not independently confirm.

Hezbollah did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

In 2022, Lebanese security forces said that they had arrested 185 people suspected of "collaboration" with Israel since 2019, a record number that mainly reflects military or telecommunications employees.
