BEIRUT — Public school teachers in Kesrouan, north of the capital, protested on Tuesday in front of the Jounieh Serail to demand improved working conditions, the state-run National News Agency reported.

According to the NNA, security personnel were present at the demonstration.

Teachers across Lebanon went on strike in early January demanding a salary increase and transport allowances, as well as medical benefits.

On Feb. 27, the caretaker cabinet approved a proposal to grant teachers additional support by subsidizing five liters of fuel per teacher per working day. Teachers' syndicates responded by lifting their strike — a decision that was not popular among a large number of teachers who insisted on continuing the protest.

Public employees are still paid in Lebanon's collapsing national currency, which has lost more than 98 percent of its value since October 2019.
