BEIRUT — Employees at the state-owned telecoms company Ogero announced in a statement Monday evening that they will observe a "warning" strike on Wednesday to protest the nonpayment of their February salaries, the state-run National News Agency reported.

The decision came following a Monday meeting between the Executive Council of the Ogero Union and caretaker Telecommunications Minister Johnny Corm, where the union's demands were presented.

"After it appeared that there is no financial appropriation, to date, for the payment of basic salaries at the end of this month. The council held an emergency session in which it decided to declare Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2023, a warning strike day, with no attendance at work centers," the statement said.

Employees of Ogero have staged several protests in recent months. The most recent strike was earlier in February when workers demanded improved salaries.

The Lebanese lira has lost more than 98 percent of its value on the parallel market since the start of the economic crisis in 2019.

The lira now officially stands at LL15,000 to the dollar, while its value on the parallel market is roughly LL81,000. Due to the crisis, more than 80 percent of the population now lives below the poverty line, according to UN figures.
