BEIRUT — The Economy and Trade Ministry on Tuesday announced an increase in the price of Lebanese bread packages. The price hike's announcement followed a press conference held by caretaker Economy Minister Amin Salam to speak about the effective implementation of a wheat import program in Lebanon set up by the World Bank and facilitated by a loan of $150 million dollars from the organization.

In a statement, the ministry justified this new increase by citing various factors, including the increase in fuel prices after the lifting of subsidies on gasoline by Banque du Liban, the soaring Lebanese lira to dollar exchange rate on the parallel market and rising world wheat prices since the beginning of the war in Ukraine in late February 2022.

After the price increase, a small package of Lebanese bread will now weigh 346 grams and be sold LL13,000, compared to LL10,000 per 340 grams previously. A medium package will weigh 838 grams and be sold at LL 22,000, compared to LL17,000 for a package of 835 grams previously. Finally, a large package will weigh 1,040 grams and sell for LL26,000, against LL21,000 to 1,107 grams previously.
