BEIRUT — Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian met with Hezbollah's leader Hassan Nasrallah Friday and discussed "the options and the threats emerging from the formation of the corrupt and radical government of the enemy entity [Israel]," Hezbollah's office announced.
The meeting took place in the presence of the Iranian ambassador in Lebanon Mojtaba Amani, Hezbollah said.
According to a statement published by the party, Abdollahian and Nasrallah also discussed "the political situation in Lebanon and Palestine as well as the position of the resistance movements and the whole axes of resistance in opposing the international and regional incidents and developments."
Earlier Friday, after a meeting with Lebanon's Foreign Affairs Minister Abdallah Bou Habib, Iran's chief diplomat, who is on a three-day visit to Lebanon, said that Teheran, Hezbollah's main ally, "does not interfere in internal" Lebanese affairs, and encouraged "a swift [presidential] election process," as Lebanon has been without a head of state since Michel Aoun's mandate ended October 31.
For his part, Bou Habib said in the press conference that "we heard from Abdollahian that Iran is attached to Lebanon's stability and the importance of holding the presidential election."
Parliament has convened ten times so far to try to elect a new president, but has failed each time due to a lack of political agreement, as is customary in Lebanon. A new session is scheduled for January 19.
Amir-Abdollahian also met on Friday with caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri.
