The European Union congratulated Lebanon and Israel on Friday after the two countries reached a historic agreement on their common maritime border, saying the deal "will help bring stability and prosperity" to both countries.
In a statement issued by Peter Stano — spokesman for EU Head of Diplomacy Josep Borrell — the EU "congratulates both countries on this success and commends the role of the United States in facilitating the negotiations."
The agreement reached is the result of long indirect negotiations between Beirut and Tel Aviv, led by the United States.
"This historic agreement will help bring stability and prosperity to both neighboring countries and the region," Stano said.
"The Union encourages both parties to continue their constructive engagements and stands ready to further develop cooperation with both countries and to support efforts for solidarity in the region for the benefit of all," he concluded.
