BEIRUT — The Lebanese Army with the support of its air force carried out ground raids early Wednesday morning in villages and towns of Wadi Khaled and al-Waer area in North Lebanon, in search of suspects, according to a tweet by the army, as well as additional reporting from our correspondent in the region.

Here's what we know:

    • On Wednesday morning the Lebanese Army said on Twitter that it had taken "exceptional security measures" in the North, "with the support of the air force, including raids and arrests of a number of wanted persons."

    • Our correspondent reported that checkpoints had been installed in several areas, and alleged wanted smugglers are among those arrested, although the army has not yet announced the number of those arrested.

    • In Tripoli, an army patrol also carried out raids which resulted in the arrest of four people who shot in the air, and two others who were accused of alleged robbery and theft.

    • In September, caretaker Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi announced that a "sustainable" security plan had been devised for North Lebanon following deadly shootings in Tripoli that had taken place that month, which raised fears of more violence. However, Mawlawi did not disclose any details on the new security plan to ensure “the safety of its implementation.”
