BEIRUT — The Mouttahidoun (United for Lebanon) collective on Saturday announced it will start taking its rights from banks "by hand" and launched a new campaign, in which it will "publish the pictures and names of bank owners and their families and the shameful judges who are compromised by them whether they are inside or outside of Lebanon."

Following the onset of an unprecedented economic crisis in October 2019, banks placed de facto capital controls on most people's deposits, while billions of dollars were transferred abroad, including those of senior politicians.

In a statement, the collective said it has created the "United Depositors and Lawyers" front that would deal with depositors' rights. The group also said that it will publish the addresses and locations of the people they hold responsible for the banking crisis, such as bank owners and judges, "with the aim of visiting them day and night and turning their families and neighbors against them and their crimes." They intend to publish their pictures and information along with their residences and workplaces, through "special groups of participants" that will implement this campaign.

Last month, a disgruntled depositor unable to withdraw funds to pay for his father's medical bills held bank employees and customers hostage for six hours with the aim of forcing the bank into giving him his money. The man, who was released after being detained for several days, successfully manage to obtain $30,000 from the bank.

The Mouttahidoun collective also vowed to defend telecommunication users' rights, after steep increases in telecommunication tarrifs in July amid an unprecedented economic crisis and the almost full dollarization of many products.
