Finance Ministry allocates funds to feed prisoners in 2022

BEIRUT — The Ministry of Finance announced in a statement Friday that it has allocated LL10 billion from budget reserves to feed prisoners in 2022.

Here’s what we know:

  • In July the ministry transferred LL3 billion to the General Directorate of the Internal Security Forces. The ministry will disburse a further LL7 billion in the coming period.

  • In a letter to caretaker Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi Thursday, six catering companies warned that they will stop providing food to prisons if seven months of outstanding payments are not settled by Sept. 1, the state-run National News Agency reported.

  • In March 2021, Lebanon’s general prosecutor Ghassan Oueidat ordered a probe following press reports that there was a risk of starvation in the country’s prisons.
