Saida municipality responds to altercations over generator costs

BEIRUT — The Saida Municipality said in a statement Tuesday that it would continue to address private generator pricing through a specialized committee and regular meetings with private generator owners after an altercation over subscription prices injured three people, the state-run National News Agency reported.

Here’s what we know:

    • According to local media reports, a committee of Saida residents monitoring private electricity generator prices clashed with a generator operator’s employees during an inspection to check private generator owners’ compliance with official prices. Shots were fired into the air and three people were injured, one of whom was hospitalized.

    • On Aug. 3, the Saida Private Generator Monitoring Committee issued a statement addressed to subscribers announcing private generator owners’ “commitment to official prices” along with numbers to call for complaints, including outages and mispricing. In June, protests erupted in Saida over private generator price hikes amid meetings between the municipality, the region’s MPs and generator owners, in an attempt to solve the issues. Three generator owners who were detained for mispricing subscriptions signed a pledge to return the discrepancies in bills to citizens for the month of May and to abide by the pricing of the Energy Ministry as a condition for their release.
