BEIRUT — The League of Civil Servants stated Tuesday evening that it will maintain its open strike, which started on June 13, in protest of the deterioration of working conditions despite social aid announced two days ago by the caretaker government of Najib Mikati.

Here’s what we know:

    • In a press release, the civil servants stated that the solutions proposed by the ministerial team responsible for assessing their situation “do not respond to their slightest demands.”

    • “In light of the civil servant’s inability to go to their place of work and to have respectful living conditions,” the league declared that it will “keep its strike open until its demands are realized.”

    • The move comes after the caretaker government said Monday that public sector workers will receive a new social assistance payment equivalent to a full month’s salary.

    • The announcement also indicated that the daily transport allowance for each in-office work day would now be set atLL95,000, up from the LL65,000 rate set in January.

    • Employees in various sectors, such as telecommunications, transportation and academia, have repeatedly voiced concerns about insufficient salaries, deteriorating living conditions and inability to commute due to the increase in fuel prices.
