BEIRUT — A fire burnt green spaces on Thursday in a plantation area that belongs to the Agriculture Ministry in the region of Abdeh, in Akkar, northern Lebanon, L’Orient Today’s correspondent in North Lebanon reported.
Here’s what we know:
• According to our correspondent, the fire spread to the fruit trees and plantation areas nearby and was made worse by strong winds and high temperatures.
• Civil Defense teams have been sent there, but suffer from a chronic lack of equipment as the country struggles from an economic collapse. The origin of the accident is still unknown, our correspondent reported. Residents of the area called on the Civil Defense centers and municipalities surrounding the fire to assist in fighting and controlling it before it spreads more and causes more losses.
• Many fires take place each year in the country especially in North Lebanon and during summer and autumn seasons many of which are of “human origin” according to caretaker Environment Minister Nasser Yassin. On Friday, a fire broke down in the Jouma area of Akkar while multiple fires also took place in Akkar last month including in Wadi Jahannam and in Safinat al-Kaytaa.
